Professional development occurs online, in person, and at various conferences and workshops throughout Alberta.

Free and for purchase training materials are available online.

Online courses offered by other provincial organizations, universities and colleges are posted in our Calendar and on Share.

We encourage you to take free, quality, online literacy courses and free HP computer & business skills training.

Coordinators working, training, and studying information

Best Practices Seminars

Best Practices Seminars are offered annually and reflect current best practices and topics of interest to literacy practitioners. Past sessions offered include:

  • Assessment and Teaching/Learning Strategies for ESL Learners
  • Demystifying Working Relationships
  • Learning Disabilities and Strategies for Supporting Learning
  • Making Connections in Your Community

The Seminars are typically one day in length and are offered in two locations in Alberta.

Workshops for Non-Profit Organizations

Literacy Alberta regularly offers workshops of interest to people working in the non-profit community. Workshops are typically one day in length. Past workshops have included:

  • Plain Language,
  • Violence and Learning.

Literacy Specialist Training

Literacy is not the sole responsibility of the literacy learner or the literacy practitioner but requires the awareness and support of the community.

Literacy Specialist training equips literacy practitioners with skills in building community capacity.

Literacy specialists provide services, businesses and individuals with development opportunities in areas of plain language, literacy awareness, literacy audits, communication strategies for barriered clients and other relevant workshops.

New Coordinator Training & New Coordinator Training Follow-up

These workshops are offered to volunteer tutor adult literacy services (VTALS) funded by Alberta Advanced Education and Technology. This 2½ day workshop will give you an orientation to:

  • program management
  • learner assessment
  • tutor training
  • program planning
  • and other relevant topics

Be prepared to learn, discuss, meet other new coordinators and begin to make a plan for the literacy program in your community.

We will do a follow-up session in six months to answer any questions you may have.

Pathways - Adult Literacy: New Paths to Learning

Provincial Literacy Conference

Literacy Alberta hosts an annual 2 day provincial conference with a wide array of professional development workshops, keynote speakers and networking opportunities for literacy practitioners, adult learners, volunteer tutors, teachers, administrators, and members of the general public.
