Volunteers and Tutors

Volunteers are the key to a literacy programs' success. Without your time, energy, and donations many aboriginal, family and adult literacy programs would not be able to exist in many rural and urban communities.

Successful Volunteer Tutors

Volunteer Tutors help aboriginal, adult, family and ESL community programs.
  • Have time that can be committed to the program.
  • Follow through with their learning plans.
  • Can empathize with learners and their struggles.
  • Are culturally sensitive and enjoy working with people from other countries.
  • Have the tenacity to keep going with the program.
  • Encourage others to learn and continue to learn themselves.
  • Communicate on a regular basis with literacy coordinators.
  • Are open to participating in the tutor-student matching process.

If you are not able to spare the time, consider making a donation. Literacy Alberta is a Registered Charity with Revenue Canada. All donations over $20 will receive an income tax receipt.

Training Opportunities

Urban and rural literacy programs provide:

  • tutor training
  • materials & resources
  • research
  • safe meeting places, and other support to new and experienced tutors

Training takes place throughout the year. Contact your local literacy program for details.
